As mechanics, we see a lot of things come through the workshop, but one of the most common—and concerning—issues is customers continuing to drive with unsafe or badly worn tyres. Despite warnings, many motorists underestimate just how vital tyres are to their safety. From our experience, the reasons vary, but the risk is always the same.

Some drivers simply don’t realise how worn their tyres have become. Tyres degrade gradually, so the change in grip or handling can be difficult to notice day-to-day. Others are aware the tyres need replacing but choose to delay the expense, not realising that waiting can cost far more in the long run. A sudden blowout, especially at motorway speeds, can cause severe damage to the vehicle—or worse, result in a serious accident.

We also see customers who believe that if the car still drives “fine,” the tyres must be okay. But tread depth and tyre structure are what really matter. Once tread wears below the legal minimum, braking distances increase dramatically, especially in wet weather. Even a short emergency stop can turn dangerous.

As mechanics, our job isn’t just to repair vehicles—it’s to help keep people safe on the road. We advise regular tyre checks, correct inflation, and timely replacement. The cost of new tyres is always cheaper than the consequences of driving on unsafe ones. Your tyres are the only part of your vehicle that actually touch the road. Their condition matters more than most drivers realise.
