What is a diesel particulate filter?

A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a component fitted to the exhaust system of diesel vehicles. It’s designed to capture and store soot (particulate matter) produced during combustion.

How does A DPF Work?

The DPF traps soot particles from the exhaust gases and periodically burns them off in a process called regeneration. This happens automatically when the exhaust gets hot enough — typically during longer, faster drives — converting soot into ash and reducing harmful emissions.

Why is it important to maintain a DPF?

Proper DPF maintenance prevents blockages, maintains engine performance, improves fuel efficiency, and ensures compliance with emissions regulations. A damaged (as illustrated here), neglected or blocked DPF can trigger warning lights, cause reduced power, and lead to costly repairs or MOT failures.
